In August, transit of grain from Belarus and Russia through Latvia rose sharply. According to the State Revenue Service, nearly 159,000 tonnes of Russian grain were handled through Latvian ports during the month, 56% more than during the same period last year.
In addition, nearly 60,500 tonnes of grain arrived in Latvia from Belarus over the summer, while there was no transit from Belarus last year. More than 80% of this grain is of Russian origin.
Meanwhile, Latvia’s parliament is considering a ban on the transit through Latvia of agricultural products and animal feed of Russian and Belarusian origin, as well as the storage of these goods in Latvian ports, customs warehouses and free zones.
