Traffic police officers in the Hrodna Region used firearms to stop a drunk driver who did not have a valid driving licence. According to the Belarusian Interior Ministry, the man ignored an order to stop and attempted to flee from the police, the ministry reported.
The incident occurred near the town of Biarozauka. Traffic police officers from the Lida District Department of Internal Affairs signalled a Hyundai driver to stop, but he refused to comply. During the pursuit, the man swerved across the road, posing a threat to other road users. After warning that he would use his firearm, an officer fired aimed shots at the car’s tyres. The ministry said the shots were fired in an uninhabited area outside a populated locality.
The driver was identified as a 48-year-old local resident who had been deprived of his driving licence on medical grounds. A medical examination found approximately 1 part per thousand of alcohol in his blood.
Six administrative reports were drawn up against him. He faces a fine of 200 base units (9,000 rubles) for driving under the influence. The driver was placed in a temporary detention facility, and the car was taken to a secured parking lot.
