Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for Belarusian democratic forces to be invited to events organised by the Central European Initiative (CEI). He made the statement on November 5 at a ceremony in which Romania handed over the CEI presidency to Ukraine, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.
“I am convinced that there is a place in this organisation for a free and democratic Belarus. I will propose inviting representatives of the Belarusian democratic forces and their leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, to our events as special guests – as a symbol of hope and the future for the Belarusian people,” Sybiha said.
According to Sybiha, Ukraine’s presidency of the CEI will focus on European security and ending Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as supporting EU enlargement, developing regional cooperation, ensuring energy security, improving infrastructure, strengthening cooperation on cybersecurity and countering disinformation.
The Central European Initiative (CEI) is a regional intergovernmental organisation established in 1989 to promote political, economic and cultural cooperation among countries in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Belarus’s participation in the CEI was suspended in 2022.
