In Belarus, a Harley-Davidson XL 1200 C motorcycle attracted the attention of traffic police because of its loud roar at night. Experts found that it was fitted with aftermarket mufflers whose noise levels exceeded permitted limits, the State Forensic Examination Committee reported.
During an inspection of the vehicle, traffic police officers suspected that the exhaust system had been modified. The rider claimed that the mufflers had been installed by the manufacturer and had not been altered.
A forensic automotive commodity examination was ordered to verify this. Specialists established that neither the front nor the rear muffler was among the components installed on the motorcycle during manufacture. Although the parts were genuine Harley-Davidson products, they were intended for tuning, and the noise they produced greatly exceeded the permitted level for public roads.
The State Forensic Examination Committee reminded the public that vehicles are prohibited from being operated if their noise levels or the concentration of harmful substances in their exhaust emissions exceed established limits.
“Even a genuine part purchased from an authorised manufacturer may not be intended for use on public roads,” the specialists noted.
