The State Control Committee has uncovered cases of corruption in water utilities in the Brest, Homiel and Minsk regions. The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened four criminal cases over bribes allegedly received by water utility officials.
According to investigators, the director of a private company organized a scheme starting in 2011 to provide illegal payments in exchange for favorable decisions on the conclusion of contracts, the provision of facilities for work and the timely payment for them under the state programs “Clean Water” and “Comfortable Housing and a Favorable Environment.”
The bribes ranged from 700 rubles to 119,000 rubles. The State Control Committee said the kickbacks averaged about 2% of the cost of completed work or supplied equipment. In total, the bribes amounted to more than 140,000 rubles.
The suspects admitted to taking bribes and fully reimbursed the proceeds obtained through criminal activity.
