Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhankou took part in a number of high-level events on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The head of Belarus’s foreign ministry drew attention to the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity and spoke out against sanctions.
Ryzhankou called sanctions a systemic obstacle facing the international community that prevents the adoption of an International Covenant on the Right to Development. Speaking at a high-level meeting marking the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Right to Development, the minister said Western states were seeking to constrain the development of “countries of the Global Majority” through “unlawful unilateral coercive measures”. They also create artificial barriers to trade and technological exchange and impose “so-called democratic models and reforms”.
“The minister spoke out against the policy of ‘might makes right’ and called for the creation of a new architecture of international economic cooperation focused on the interests of people, rather than Western elites. Regional associations such as BRICS and the SCO were cited as positive examples of how such mechanisms function”, the Foreign Ministry said.
The minister also spoke about sanctions at a high-level meeting on measures to address climate change and ensure a just transition.
“He paid particular attention to unlawful unilateral coercive measures that make it difficult for many states to access clean technologies and renewable energy sources. He emphasized that the boycott of the airspace of Belarus and Russia deliberately lengthens routes and increases the carbon footprint many times over”, the ministry’s press service said.
Ryzhankou drew attention to the West’s manipulation of the “green agenda,” called for an end to double standards and the politicization of environmental issues, and advocated joint efforts to overcome the climate crisis. In addition to political rhetoric, Ryzhankou also spoke about Belarus’s efforts to transition to clean energy and reduce carbon emissions and highlighted the advantages of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, a meeting of the foreign ministers of the CSTO member states was also held. They discussed preparations for the Collective Security Council, which will take place on November 11.
“The head of Belarus’s foreign ministry drew attention to the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century, which will be launched on September 25, 2026, at the 11th meeting of the Group of Like-Minded Countries in Support of Middle-Income Countries on the sidelines of the current session of the General Assembly.
Maksim Ryzhankou briefed his colleagues on the priorities of the Belarusian delegation at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly”, the Foreign Ministry added.
