River gates have been installed on the Marycha River at the border between Belarus, Lithuania and Poland to combat illegal migration, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) reports.
The engineering structure was installed near the “Mara” border marker, within the area of responsibility of the Kapčiamiestis border post of VSAT’s Varėna Border Guard Unit. The project was initiated by Poland.
The gates are connected to a physical barrier installed on the Lithuanian side and a similar structure on the Polish side.
According to the Lithuanian border guard service, the structure will give border guards rapid access to this section and help prevent illegal border crossings.
