A working meeting on the legal problems faced by Belarusians in Italy was held at the Florence Bar Association. The main topic was the situation of Belarusian citizens whose passports have expired and who cannot safely return to Belarus to obtain new documents.
The Belarusian side was represented by Yuliya Yukhno, head of the Belarusian Community Center and a representative of the Belarusian People’s Embassy in Italy; Leanid Marozau, legal adviser to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya; and Viasna human rights defender and former political prisoner Uladzimir Labkovich.
The participants also discussed the legal situation in Belarus, politically motivated persecution and transnational repression, risks faced by Belarusians abroad if they return to the country, as well as issues of international protection, legalization and documentation for Belarusians in Italy.
The sides agreed to develop cooperation between the Belarusian and Italian legal communities and strengthen legal protection for Belarusians in Italy, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office reported.
