Pope Leo XIV Undergoes Surgery to Remove Lung Tumor

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a lung tumor. The pontiff spent about three hours in the operating room, while the procedure itself lasted approximately an hour and a half. The operation was successful and there were no complications.

The Pope regained consciousness after the surgery and returned to his hospital room. He has been diagnosed with cancer.

“The lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique. An intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected based on preoperative tests,” the Holy See said in a press release.
