Belarusian political prisoners who arrived in Warsaw will begin the legalization process in Poland as early as tomorrow. This was reported by the United Transitional Cabinet. They will be able to submit applications for international protection.
The agreement was reached at a meeting between Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet Pavel Latushka and the leadership of the Polish Border Guard Headquarters and the Warsaw Border Guard Command.
The freed political prisoners will be able to submit documents at four Polish Border Guard offices. Polish border guards have expressed readiness to accept applications on weekends, Saturday and Sunday, in order to help speed up the legalization procedure.
Pavel Latushka expressed gratitude to Poland’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the Border Guard, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their prompt response to the requests.
The issue of legalization was also discussed at a meeting with the leadership of the Office for Foreigners. The parties worked out an algorithm for further steps.
“Our first task is, in coordination with the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Border Guard (and a corresponding letter has been sent to him), to determine the days and times for submitting applications for international protection by freed Belarusians who have decided to remain in Poland.
The second request we addressed to the Polish side is, where possible, to consider applications for international protection from former political prisoners within the shortest possible time frame,” Pavel Latushka said.
He also asked the Polish side to take into account the special situation related to the freed political prisoners: some of them do not have documents and therefore require rapid legalization and social integration in the host country. Issues of social assistance for the freed political prisoners were also discussed.
