Applicants for Polish citizenship will be required to pass a special test. The amendments to the Citizenship Act are included in a draft being prepared by Poland’s Ministry of Interior and Administration. Commenting on the proposed test on Radio Zet, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński described citizenship as the greatest gift the Polish state can offer.
“There will be around 40 questions about Polish culture, traditions, history and social realities, including knowledge of contemporary society. In my view, the point is this…
Mr. Editor, the point is this: Polish citizenship is the highest act of recognition and the greatest gift the Polish state can bestow on a person who applies for it.
Obviously, these people must undergo very thorough vetting; naturally, they must be assimilated into Poland. Clearly, the center of their lives must be here. The purpose of this test is to confirm that a person has assimilated into Polish culture and traditions and is part of Polish society,” he said.
Work on the draft is in its final stages. However, the final text is not yet known, although the Ministry of Interior and Administration has published some details. In addition to the test, the language requirement would be raised from B1 to B2, the required period of residence in the country would be extended, and provisions would be introduced allowing acquired citizenship to be revoked for violations.
Marcin Kierwiński was also asked what would happen to people who had already begun the process of being recognized as Polish citizens or acquiring citizenship.
“Everything depends on when this bill is adopted. It is at the final stage of preparation. It was recently added to the government’s legislative work schedule.
I am waiting for confirmation from the finance minister regarding funding, because the bill provides for a small amount of additional funding in the first year of its implementation.
Depending on when it is adopted, we will know whom it will apply to. In this respect, it will obviously not apply to those who are currently in the final stages of the procedure,” the minister said.
