Poland plans to extend controls on its borders with Lithuania and Germany, the country’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration said. The controls will be extended for another six months, from October 2, 2026, to March 30, 2027.
The ministry justified the move by saying that the migration route through Belarus and the Baltic states remains active. Since the controls were introduced on July 7, 2025, Polish border guards have checked 4.3 million people, refused entry to 2,300 people, returned 1,300 under readmission procedures, and detained 130 people for assisting illegal border crossings.
At the same time, the Ministry of the Interior and Administration did not rule out ending the controls early if the situation at the borders improves.
It should be noted that in recent months, attempts by migrants to cross the Polish-Belarusian border illegally have been recorded only rarely. The main flow now passes through Latvia. Migrants then travel through Lithuania and Poland in an attempt to reach Western European countries.
Poland has established permanent checkpoints on major roads entering the country from Lithuania, while secondary roads are subject to selective checks. There have also been cases of Polish border guards detaining migrants along the so-called green border with Lithuania.
