Poland Extends Border Controls With Germany and Lithuania

Poland’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration has extended border controls with Germany and Lithuania for another six months. The controls will remain in place until March 30, 2027.

The controls were introduced on July 7, 2025, as a measure in response to an increase in migration flows from Belarus, the Polish ministry said in a statement.

During this period, more than 4.5 million people and nearly 2.3 million vehicles have been checked. At the border with Lithuania, nearly 1,300 people were refused entry, and more than 130 people were detained for assisting illegal border crossings. At the German border, more than 1,200 travelers were refused entry.

“Border controls are an effective tool for reducing illegal migration. Expanding measures to strengthen them will help maintain control over migration flows and enhance border security,” the Ministry of the Interior and Administration said.

Border controls with Lithuania are being enforced by approximately 118,000 border guards, police officers and military personnel, while 211,000 personnel are deployed along the German border. Controls are being carried out at 50 checkpoints along the Polish-German border and 13 checkpoints along the Polish-Lithuanian border.
