Poland Confirms Deaths of Parents and Sister of Suspect in Kraków Shooting

Polish police have confirmed that the bodies found the previous day in an apartment in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski belonged to the parents and sister of 24-year-old Michał O., who is suspected of carrying out a mass shooting in Kraków. According to preliminary findings, they died from gunshot wounds, Fakt reports.

Andrzej Fijołek, a spokesperson for the Polish National Police Commander-in-Chief, told the newspaper that the victims were the suspect’s 53-year-old father, 52-year-old mother and 20-year-old sister.

“The victims had gunshot wounds. They probably died from gunshots,” Fijołek said.

According to the Świętokrzyskie Provincial Police, the bodies of three people were discovered on November 7 shortly before 10 p.m. in an apartment in a residential building in the centre of Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. Residents were evacuated during the operation and were later allowed to return home.

“The bodies bore injuries that, according to preliminary findings, are classified as gunshot wounds. They were taken away for a detailed forensic examination. Seven firearms were seized from the apartment,” the police statement said.

According to Fakt, one of the weapons was registered in the suspect’s father’s name. Counterterrorism officers, forensic experts and a prosecutor worked at the scene throughout the night. Police searches are continuing.

Fakt also spoke to the family’s neighbours. According to them, the suspect’s parents, Renata and Janusz O., lived with their son, while their daughter permanently resided in Kraków. On the day of the tragedy, she had reportedly come to visit her parents.

A neighbour, Zdzisław Szostak, said he had been friends with the deceased couple and lived on the same floor.

“We lived door to door. We celebrated New Year’s Eve together. They were such cheerful people. Unlike him,” the man said.

According to neighbours, the suspect’s parents were sociable and friendly. His mother worked as a cashier at a nearby Biedronka supermarket.

Residents described Michał O. as a withdrawn person who rarely greeted anyone and hardly spoke to other people.

“He was a bit strange. He never talked. Sometimes, very rarely, he would say ‘good morning’. Otherwise, he always had his hood up. I never saw him wearing camouflage,” Szostak said.

“The son was the only one who never smiled. He was distant and sad. He dressed in black,” another neighbour added.

Residents said they had never heard arguments or noise coming from the family’s apartment. They also reported hearing nothing suspicious on the day the three people were allegedly killed.

Szostak said he knew that his neighbours owned firearms. According to him, the father and son were interested in shooting and went to a nearby shooting range every Sunday morning. The man admitted that he had not considered this dangerous. He last saw Michał O. on November 6, the day before the attack in Kraków. According to the neighbour, the young man was silent as usual.

On November 7, an armed man wearing a mask drove a car onto Kraków’s Main Market Square and opened fire on passers-by. He then attempted to flee and fired at police officers during the pursuit. Police officers wounded and arrested the attacker. He was taken to a hospital in Kraków.

Six people were killed in the shooting and another 16 were injured, including the suspect. Two of the injured were police officers, one of whom is in critical condition.

According to preliminary findings, the attacker acted alone. He held a firearms licence, had no previous criminal convictions and had not appeared in police databases. A significant quantity of weapons and ammunition was seized from his car. Poland’s Minister of the Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, also said the man may have been interested in far-right ideologies. The motive for the crime is being established.
