Armenia will soon begin the process of applying for EU membership. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made the statement while presenting the government’s program to parliament.
The Armenian prime minister stressed that a referendum on choosing between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union makes sense only when there is a real alternative. To create one, the government will begin taking formal steps.
“And to answer these questions, Armenia, first of all, must submit an official application for EU membership. This is a process that requires a great deal of work, and in the near future we will begin this process, at least in response to the call from our colleagues in the EAEU”, Pashinyan said.
It should be recalled that in May, the leaders of the other four EAEU member states adopted a statement calling for a nationwide referendum in Armenia on joining the EU or remaining part of the EAEU.
Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly responded that holding such a referendum currently makes no sense because Armenia has no real alternative in the form of the European Union. The country is not only not a candidate for membership, but has not even submitted an application for membership to the EU.
