Pashinyan Confirms Intention to Apply for EU Membership Within the Next Two Years

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed at a briefing today that Armenia intends to apply for membership in the European Union in 2027 or 2028. He made a similar statement in Brussels on Tuesday.

“We have not yet begun preparations to leave the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). We intend to offer our people alternative options, as we promised. Our people must have the opportunity to make a choice.

We are not planning to leave the EAEU, but you know that our partners in this structure are raising the issue of moving to a new stage and holding a referendum.

I have said that, at present, there are no grounds for holding a referendum. Before holding a referendum on leaving the EAEU and joining the EU, we must go through certain procedures.

We are following this path. It is clear to me that this process will lead to us officially submitting an application in 2027 or 2028 to begin the process of becoming a full member of the European Union,” he said, according to Armenpress.
