Object Resembling Weapon Pointed At Latvian Soldiers. Latvia Reveals Details Of Border Incident

Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces Kaspars Pudāns has provided details of an incident on the Belarusian-Latvian border. According to him, stones and branches were thrown at Latvian servicemen, and an “object resembling a weapon” was pointed at them.

According to Pudāns, several people crossed the border and climbed over the fence. Latvian servicemen who arrived at the scene began detaining the border violators. At that point, stones began to be thrown at them from the Belarusian side.

“They began making threats, throwing stones, pieces of trees and logs at our servicemen, and an object resembling a weapon was also pointed at the soldiers,” Pudāns said on TV3’s “900 Seconds” program.

Because of poor visibility and the distance, the soldiers could not confirm whether the object was actually a weapon. They retreated several meters to avoid escalation, but the migrants’ attempts to cross the border were thwarted.

Earlier this week, the Latvian army reported a provocation on the Belarusian-Latvian border. Armed masked people drove a group of at least 20 migrants toward the Latvian border and threatened Latvian servicemen.

The attempted border crossing was thwarted, but several hours later, masked people entered Latvian territory, damaged a distribution cabinet, stole surveillance cameras and fled to Belarus before Latvian border guards arrived.
