The National Bank is testing a QR code payment system. Pilot payments for goods using QR codes have been carried out through the regulator’s instant payment system and the KROK service.
“Today we can proudly state that the Republic of Belarus now has a new payment service — KROK. This is one small step for every Belarusian and a very significant step for the country’s entire payment system. I am referring primarily to the diversification of payment risks. This is our payment sovereignty and payment independence,” said Anton Padrez, head of the National Bank’s main department for the payment system and digital technologies, Sb.by reported.
According to him, the system does not use card technologies. When a payment is made, funds are credited to the legal entity’s account in real time. The system is expected to operate around the clock. Purchases will be payable by mobile phone using the application of any bank in the country. Bank cards will not need to be linked to the phone. Payments for individuals will be free of charge.
“We will set a tariff policy, and it will be much more interesting and attractive compared with card systems. This is work with accounts, work with payment systems that belong to us. Therefore, this is a fully Belarusian service,” Padrez added.
Three banks and two large retail stores are participating in the pilot project.
In February 2026, the National Bank will adopt regulations governing the operation of the KROK system. By July 1, banks of the first group of systemically important banks will be required to connect to it. By the end of 2026, all banks in the country are expected to participate in the project.
