Minsk Resident Posed as Defense Ministry Officer and Swindled Women Out of Money

Officers from the 8th Directorate of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption of the Interior Ministry in Homiel Region, together with Almaz special forces officers, detained a 44-year-old man who allegedly posed as a law enforcement officer and swindled money from affluent single women.

As the Interior Ministry reported, the Minsk resident, who had been convicted several times before, initially posed as a law enforcement officer and offered a 42-year-old woman help in preventing her father from being prosecuted after ammunition and explosives were found in his possession. Under this pretext, the suspect persuaded her to hand over a bribe.

Further operational activities revealed other incidents. The man met affluent single women on dating websites and in public places, gained their trust and entered into relationships with them.

He presented himself as a senior Defense Ministry official and, to make his claims more convincing, showed them a military uniform with epaulettes, despite having no ties to the security services. Using various pretexts, he swindled large sums of money from the women. Some victims handed over their savings and took out loans.

Some of the victims have already been identified. The total damage amounted to about $150,000.

Investigators have opened a criminal case. They are identifying other possible fraud incidents and victims. Anyone who may have been affected by the detainee’s actions is asked to call +375-29-561-20-53 or 102.
