Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the site of a Russian drone strike on the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. Two people were killed and seven others were injured in the attack on September 28.
“The strike was directed specifically at the academy. We know for certain that it was a deliberate strike, and there are corresponding video recordings. Russian terrorists simply wanted to strike the Academy of Sciences and destroy it,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy thanked Merz for his visit to Kyiv, noting that the chancellor was in the city during an air raid alert and Russian attacks.
“This is an important and courageous signal from the chancellor personally and from all of Germany. Thank you, Friedrich,” the Ukrainian leader stressed.
According to him, Merz began his visit to Ukraine by paying tribute to the memory of fallen Ukrainian servicemen.
“We appreciate the respect for our soldiers and solidarity with the Ukrainian people. It is important that Germany is by our side at this difficult time — in support and in remembrance. Eternal glory to all the defenders of Ukraine, men and women, who gave their lives for Ukraine and all of Europe,” Zelenskyy added.
