Mandatory Hotel Certification Planned in Belarus

Belarus may introduce mandatory hotel certification. The relevant draft decree has been approved and is now before the government, according to the First Information TV channel.

“We are waiting to see what decision will be made. We are drawing on Russia’s experience, where certification is mandatory. If an accommodation facility does not meet the required standards, the certification body issues a list of non-compliances and specifies what needs to be done to obtain a category,” said Tatsiana Smirnova, head of the service certification department at BelGISS.

The draft decree provides for a phased introduction of certification: by January 1, 2028, for large hotels with more than 70 rooms, and by January 1, 2029, for hotels with fewer than 70 rooms.

There are currently around 230 hotels operating in Belarus. Of these, 90 hold certificates confirming compliance with categories ranging from “no stars” to “five stars”: five five-star hotels, 10 four-star hotels, 44 three-star hotels, 10 two-star hotels and 12 hotels with no star rating. Nine hostels have also been certified.
