A 50-year-old resident of Slawharad was detained after around 370 rounds of ammunition, weapons and a substance suspected to be TNT were found in his possession. As the Belarusian Investigative Committee reported, investigators tracked down the man after officers from the Mahiliou Regional Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora identified two Slawharad residents illegally fishing with nets.
During a search of one man’s home and outbuildings, officers discovered a suspected explosive substance, ammunition, weapons and other items. According to the detainee, he had bought a metal detector and spent more than 15 years searching for World War II-era objects, including shells, grenades and ammunition. In addition, acquaintances who knew about his hobby had given him shotguns and other weapons. Preliminary information indicates that some of the weapons had not been registered in accordance with the established procedure.
A criminal case was opened against the man under Part 2 of Article 295 of the Criminal Code, which provides for liability for the illegal acquisition, carrying and possession of ammunition and other explosive substances.
Investigators are establishing the origin of the seized items and the circumstances in which they were acquired. A final legal assessment of the suspect’s actions will be made after expert examinations.
