Lukashenka: Trump Is Preventing World War III in Ukraine

Aliaksandr Lukashenka threatened the outbreak of a Third World War, which he said would be nuclear, during a speech at the Minsk Conference on Eurasian Security. He said that only US President Donald Trump was preventing it from starting by trying to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Lukashenka repeatedly called for hostilities to stop, primarily in Ukraine.

“Through his actions, however contradictory they may be, Trump is essentially keeping the world from a Third World War for now, one that could erupt in a nuclear form. And that is already… You cannot hide from it across the ocean,” he said.

“And if escalation occurs in Ukraine, I am talking about Ukraine, not the war between Russia and Ukraine. Russia is now fighting in Ukraine against practically the entire West. We know this very well. I am not repeating some Russian or anyone else’s narratives. We know this very well.

I am well informed about this, right down to the voices coming from the trenches on the side of some Western countries, and unfortunately not only Western ones. There are people there from Asia and Africa as well. They are making money from bloodshed. If we do not stop in Ukraine now, as Trump is proposing, regardless of his reasons — let us leave that aside for now — whether they are domestic political considerations in the United States or something else, the difference is not great.

If we do not stop and continue down the path of escalation, we will inevitably end up in a Third World War. And how will it end? Even major politicians are now speaking about it openly. You cannot hide from a nuclear strike across the ocean. So, whether he understands it or not, whether he is aware of it or not, Trump is doing a great thing,” he said.

Lukashenka noted that many people were dying in Ukraine, but said he would not describe the situation as a meat grinder.

“I would not say, as many journalists do, that there is a meat grinder in Ukraine right now. No, but many people are dying on both sides. Do we need this? Nobody needs it. That is why we need to put our pride aside and understand what may happen tomorrow. This is very important because it will affect Belarus and Turkey, which have a war right on their doorstep, as well as Poland and others. And the interests that these countries I have mentioned have constructed in their minds could collapse in a single day. This war is also particularly dangerous because any terrible turn of events is possible,” he said.

He once again stressed that hostilities must stop.

“Events could unfold that might reverse the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East. If someone is watching these events from the sidelines today and thinks they can sit them out, tomorrow it may turn out that they cannot. So we understand clearly: to prevent this dangerous turn of events, we must stop,” he said.
