Aliaksandr Lukashenka has dismissed Police Major General Dzmitry Karziuk from his post as Belarusian Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. The decree was signed today. It also provides for Karziuk’s retirement from the internal affairs bodies on age grounds.
Upon retirement, he retains the right to wear the prescribed uniform and insignia, Lukashenka’s press service reported.
Karziuk had served in the internal affairs bodies since 1993, beginning his career as a traffic police inspector. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in October 2021. Before that, he headed the Main Directorate of the State Traffic Inspectorate.
On December 2, 2021, Karziuk was added to the US sanctions list. The formal basis was his status as an official of the Belarusian government. He was also added to Canada’s sanctions list on the same day.
In its official justification for the sanctions, the US Treasury Department described Karziuk as a close associate of Viktar and Dzmitry Lukashenka. He had participated in hockey teams and motorcycle events alongside members of the Lukashenka family.
