Aliaksandr Lukashenka criticised the OSCE at the Minsk Conference on Eurasian Security. Regional organisations also came in for criticism, with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) described as “languid”.
“Unfortunately, today, with international institutions turning a blind eye and giving their tacit consent, the force of international law has been completely overshadowed by the law of force. This applies above all to the United Nations. With all due respect to this organisation, a lot is said, but practically nothing is done. The League of Nations, which was replaced by the UN, collapsed because it was unable to prevent the Second World War. I fear the UN is destined to meet the same fate. I would not want that to happen. It is no secret that Western officials are calling the shots in the organisation’s apparatus today. It is hardly surprising that its agenda does not serve the interests of the global majority. Confusion and uncertainty prevail, and not a trace of the spirit of solidarity remains,” he said.
Against this backdrop, Lukashenka believes, countries are turning to regional organisations. But these, too, are failing to meet their expectations.
“It would be quite logical under these circumstances for countries to gravitate towards regional associations where they can solve problems together with like-minded partners. I would very much like to say today that the importance of the SCO, BRICS, the CSTO and other platforms is growing. But I cannot say that. Their agendas and the behaviour of their members are also rather sluggish. I spoke about this at one of the SCO meetings,” he said.
