Lukashenka Asks Homiel Residents Not to Worry About Zelenskyy’s Remarks

Aliaksandr Lukashenka on Tuesday morning received a report from Homiel Region Governor Ivan Kubrakou.

According to Lukashenka’s press service, Kubrakou briefed him on the overall situation in the region, the situation on the border with Ukraine and in border areas, as well as local residents’ reaction to recent statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

As a reminder, Zelenskyy gave Lukashenka one week to switch off relay transmitters installed in Belarus and allegedly used by Russia to guide drones toward Ukrainian cities. If this is not done, the Ukrainian side said it would resolve the issue itself.

Kubrakou assured Lukashenka that the situation in the region, “while generally difficult, remains stable and under control”, and that “the closest attention is being paid to security issues”.

“The head of state asked that Homiel residents be told not to worry or be concerned. We have everything necessary to protect the population from any aggressor”, the press service said.

The report also covered cooperation with the Russian side and relevant Belarusian agencies in providing assistance to those affected by a drone attack on a bus in Russia’s Bryansk region.

Personnel issues, preparations for the harvest, livestock modernization and the region’s broader socio-economic development were also discussed.

BelTA later published comments by Kubrakou on the report.

“The president asked that residents of Homiel Region be told not to worry about anything: we have sufficient forces and resources to repel an attack by any aggressor. Everything will be done to ensure the safety of our citizens.

The president was also interested in another issue: the season for gathering wild berries and mushrooms is approaching. What is the situation in this regard, given that in previous years there were requests from the Ukrainian side concerning gathering activities near the border and in the territories of the Lelchytsy and Yelsk districts? The president instructed us to examine issues related to ensuring the safe organization of such activities, if they are necessary for Ukrainian citizens. This work will be carried out, and I will report on the possibilities and proposals to the head of state”, he said.

The regional governor also commented on Zelenskyy’s remarks.

“This sensitive topic could not be avoided during the report. The head of state was interested in how people were reacting and how the situation was developing.
Analyzing various opinions and comments from people, it appears that Volodymyr Zelenskyy needed to deflect attention from the situation involving the shelling of the bus in which our children were injured. A new wave was created around an issue that effectively does not exist. We understand that these tricks and tactics are diverting attention from the main topic being discussed today by residents of Homiel Region and the entire country — the bus tragedy. This situation is receiving a harsh assessment from the public”, he said.
