Lukashenka Ally Dodon Seeks to Block Creation of “For a Democratic Belarus” Group in Moldova’s Parliament

Igor Dodon, a pro-Russian politician, chairman of the Party of Socialists, former president of Moldova and an ally of Lukashenka, accused Moldovan President Maia Sandu of creating a parliamentary group “to overthrow Lukashenka.”

By the “group to overthrow Lukashenka,” Dodon was referring to the creation of the “For a Democratic Belarus” parliamentary group. The formation of the group was announced in July 2026, and a vote is scheduled for today, September 17.

Dodon said the ruling PAS party wanted to focus on “overthrowing Lukashenka” despite Moldova’s economic problems.

“We have problems with energy resources, we have problems — people do not know how they will get through the winter, while PAS today wants to urgently deal with overthrowing Lukashenka in Parliament. Are you even all right? What does Moldova have to do with its problems, and what does Belarus have to do with it?” Dodon said in a video posted on his Telegram channel.

Dodon called Sandu and the PAS party part of George Soros’s network and accused them of carrying out orders from the European Union.

“In fact, what is happening proves once again that PAS and Maia Sandu have no agenda of their own, no agenda related to the national interests and interests of citizens. They are part of the globalist Soros network, which received an urgent order from Brussels or from elsewhere that a decision against Lukashenka, in support of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and in favor of democratizing Belarus must be approved,” Dodon said.

Dodon also addressed Belarusians. He said that the people of Moldova consider “Belarus” a friendly state and that most international leaders trust Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

He recalled that the United States had begun lifting sanctions against Belarus. In Dodon’s view, this indicates that Belarus is considered an important trading partner in the world.

He called on residents of Moldova to take to the streets in protest against PAS over rising prices and uncertainty about how Moldova will live in the coming months.
