Aliaksandr Lukashenka expects the war between Russia and Ukraine to end in the coming months. He made the statement at the Minsk Conference on Eurasian Security. In June, he had already said that the war could end this year.
“The war in Ukraine will end in the coming months. That is my personal opinion,” he said.
According to him, the main reason for expecting such an outcome is that all sides are tired of the war.
“That’s it. There is no strength left, and there are no resources left. Everyone is tired. When I talk about resources, I do not mean that there is a shortage of certain resources. Russia has enough, God willing, for the whole world. I am not talking about those resources. There are no resources left in people’s minds: everyone is already tired of this war, and even in Europe they have finally begun to understand who was primarily responsible for the escalation that disrupted the peace in 2022, or perhaps in 2024 — there were several attempts to stop the fighting. Those same leading European politicians destroyed that peace.
This happened on our soil. I was involved in it, so I have the right to speak about it. But even among them, you can see what is happening in Europe.
This is not because some political struggle is unfolding there. Politicians simply use the situation for their own purposes, as they usually do. As I have already said, in 2022 this confrontation could have ended within weeks, or even days. Belarus made considerable efforts to achieve this, but Kyiv’s Western friends — in quotation marks, of course — demanded that Ukraine fight to the last Ukrainian, flooding our southern neighbour with weapons. We saw those shipments passing near our borders. A real opportunity to achieve peace and save many thousands of lives was lost,” he said.
Lukashenka believes Belarus is doing everything it can to “minimise the horrors of war”, including by arranging exchanges of prisoners of war.
“Belarus never sought to act as a mediator. But today it is doing everything possible to minimise the horrors of this war. We arrange exchanges of prisoners of war, the transfer of the bodies of those killed, the repatriation of civilians in both directions, and continue to receive Ukrainians fleeing the war. Nearly half a million Ukrainian citizens have arrived in Belarus since the start of hostilities and settled here,” he said.
It should be noted that numerous investigations have shown that Belarusian industrial enterprises supply goods and equipment for the needs of Russia’s military-industrial complex. Belarus also manufactures military products that are subsequently sent to Russia. Ukraine has repeatedly said that signal repeaters operating on Belarusian territory are used to maintain communications with drones attacking targets in Ukrainian cities.
