LRT Reports What Lithuanians Think About Sanctions Against Belarus

LRT has published the results of a survey of Lithuanian residents regarding sanctions against Belarus.

The survey was conducted by Baltic Research between April 23 and May 7. It involved 1,000 residents of Lithuania aged 18 and over (a representative sample). The margin of error does not exceed 3.1 percentage points.

According to LRT, 35% of respondents believe Lithuania should ease some sanctions and establish dialogue with Minsk.

• 30% support maintaining the sanctions and the current policy.
• 17% believe the sanctions should be tightened.
• 11% favour the complete removal of sanctions.

The United States has been seeking to influence Lithuania on the issue of sanctions. It recently emerged that U.S. presidential special envoy John Coale sent a letter proposing that Lithuania and Poland facilitate the transit of Belarusian potash fertilisers. Officials in Vilnius say the sanctions were imposed by the European Union and will remain in force until February 2027, making unilateral steps by Lithuania effectively impossible.
