The Lithuanian Seimas has taken up a bill proposing amendments to the law establishing restrictive measures against citizens of Belarus and Russia.
The bill was presented to the Lithuanian parliament by Deputy Foreign Minister Vidmantas Verbickas. It proposes banning the acquisition of real estate near facilities of major importance to national security. The ban would apply to holders of temporary and permanent residence permits, as well as Belarusian and Russian citizens who do not hold such permits.
The amendments also propose banning Russian and Belarusian citizens, people residing in those countries, legal entities established there, entities without legal personality and their branches from engaging in public activities in Lithuania in the fields of education, science and research, culture, sports, art and entertainment.
Following the presentation of the bill, 93 lawmakers voted in favour. Four abstained.
The bill has been referred to the committees on national security and defence and on foreign affairs for consideration.
The Seimas will return to the bill on November 19.
