Lithuania’s parliament backed in the first reading a constitutional amendment that would remove from the constitution a ban on deploying weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on the country’s territory.
The amendment was supported by 106 members of parliament, while 18 voted against it and six abstained.
Under the legislation, the parliament will have to consider the amendment again. The vote must take place at least three months later, with at least 94 lawmakers required to vote in favor.
Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas announced that the final vote is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 12, 2027.
