Head of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office in Lithuania Dzianis Kuchynski and lawyers from the Office met with Vytis Jurkonis, head of Freedom House’s office in Lithuania, a human rights organization that supports Belarusian activists and human rights defenders, assists victims of repression and monitors the human rights situation in Belarus.
The sides discussed support for Belarusians in Lithuania, as well as preparations for the possible arrival of released political prisoners. Particular attention was paid to their legalization and arranging assistance from the first days after their arrival. They also discussed joint activities in Lithuania and the United States.
Kuchynski said that following the visit of U.S. President’s Special Envoy John Coale to Lithuania, released political prisoners could arrive in the country.
“If this happens, they will need assistance from the first day. That is why we are already coordinating our work with the Freedom House team and other organizations: who will meet people, where they can turn and what support they will receive in the first days. Thank you for being ready to get involved quickly and help,” he said.
If political prisoners are released and sent to Lithuania, assistance is ready to be provided by Tsikhanouskaya’s Office, Freedom House, the Country for Life Foundation, the Volnyia and Dissidentby initiatives, the Lithuanian Red Cross, the Belarusian Human Rights House, the Viasna Human Rights Center, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, Belarusian PEN and the BySol Foundation.
