Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service is deploying another mission to Latvia from July 1. Nine Lithuanian border guards will assist their Latvian colleagues in countering migratory pressure from Belarus.
According to the Lithuanian service, Latvia is experiencing significant pressure from migrants. Secondary migration flows from Latvia have increased more than fourfold this year.
The Lithuanian border guards will carry out border surveillance, prevent irregular migration and perform other duties in the most problematic sections of the border. The deployed personnel include two dog handlers with service dogs.
The border guards will serve in Latvia for two weeks.
According to the Lithuanian authorities, Latvia has prevented 6,681 attempts by migrants to cross the border illegally from Belarus this year, while Lithuania has recorded 869 such attempts. In addition, 1,516 migrants who had previously entered Latvia and were attempting to continue westward, mainly through Lithuania and Poland, were detained outside Latvia.
