Belarusian human rights defenders have recognized lawyer Dzmitry Laeuski and 13 other people as political prisoners. As of September 10, 2026, the number of political prisoners stands at 902, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.
On September 9, Dzmitry Laeuski was sentenced to three years in a penal colony under Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code (facilitating extremist activities) and Article 369-1 of the Criminal Code (discrediting the Republic of Belarus) for interviews with Belarusian independent media in 2020–2021, when he represented politician Viktar Babaryka and lawyer Maksim Znak.
Also recognized as political prisoners were Anton Barysenka, Daniil Bykau, Siarhei Valodzka, Tatsiana Vetsiorets, Siarhei Vysotski, Maksim Dziamchuk, Iryna Druchynina, Hleb Hancharau, Uladzimir Karchouny, Arystarkh Krukouski, Heorhi Maksimenkau, Maksim Khviasko, Dzmitry Yuran.
