Large Georgian Festival Returns to Minsk After Seven-Year Hiatus

The Georgian culture festival Tbilisoba returns to Minsk this Saturday. It was held in the Belarusian capital every autumn from 2015 to 2019.

The news was announced by Tengiz Dumbadze, chairman of the Sakartvelo Georgian Cultural and Educational Society. The organisers approached the city authorities with a proposal to resume Tbilisoba in the centre of the capital, and the initiative was supported.

Tbilisoba is a celebration marking the harvest and the end of the main agricultural work season, as well as honouring the city of Tbilisi itself. In Georgia, it is celebrated every year on the first weekend of October.

After a seven-year break, the festival is returning to the Belarusian capital. This time, however, it will take place at a different location: the festival is moving from the Upper Town to the grounds near the Palace of Sports, where it will be held this Saturday, October 3.

The festival will begin at 12:00. Representatives of various national diasporas and associations living in Belarus will perform first. From 14:00, the focus will shift to Georgian culture. Guests can look forward to music, dancing, interesting stories, and excerpts from films about Georgia shot by Tengiz Dumbadze himself.

One of the key themes will be the 1,700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as the state religion in Georgia.

A market and a food court serving some of the best-known Caucasian dishes will operate at the venue throughout the day.

Admission is free.
