Investigative Committee Confirms Death of Man Who Shot at Police Officers

The Investigative Committee has reported that a resident of Astravets District who opened fire on police officers has died. A criminal case has been opened under Part 1 of Article 14 and Article 362 of the Criminal Code (attempted murder of an employee of the internal affairs agencies).

The Investigative Committee confirmed the account provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs earlier this morning. Police received information that a 65-year-old local resident was illegally keeping firearms and threatening his neighbours with them. Police officers, supported by special forces from the Internal Troops, were dispatched to his home.

“According to preliminary information, the pensioner offered armed resistance and fired a shot in the direction of law enforcement officers, posing a real threat to their lives and health. In response to the unlawful actions, an officer from a special unit used a firearm to neutralize the threat. The man died from his injuries,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

A hunting rifle, cartridges, two objects resembling homemade pistols and three rounds of ammunition for a rifled firearm were seized from the man’s home. A series of forensic examinations has been ordered.
