The Belarusian Coordination Council has approved, following a vote, the creation of an International Commission, a Commission on Reforms and Transitional Period Preparation, and an Ethics Commission.
The creation of the International Commission was supported by 68 delegates, with none voting against and three abstaining. Seventy-one of the Coordination Council’s 80 members took part in the vote. The commission’s chair is to be elected in a second round.
In the first round of voting for the chair of the International Commission, none of the three candidates secured the required majority. Marharyta Vorykhava (the “Nastup” movement) and Ksenia Lutskina (“European Choice”) advanced to the second round. Vorykhava received 36 votes, Lutskina 28, and Aliaksandra Mamayeva one. Seven participants either abstained or voted against all candidates. The quorum was 72 out of 80 members.
The Coordination Council also approved the establishment of the Commission on Reforms and Transitional Period Preparation. The decision was backed by 70 delegates, while three abstained.
Yury Hubarevich of the “Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement” was elected chair of the commission with 54 votes. Aliaksandr Rakitski of the “Stop Being Afraid!” initiative was elected deputy chair with 46 votes.
The creation of the Ethics Commission was supported by 70 members of the Coordination Council, while two abstained. Earlier, Ales Mikhalevich presented the composition of the commission, which is tasked with overseeing compliance with the Coordination Council’s code of ethics and reducing the use of hate speech in its work. In addition to Mikhalevich, who will serve as chair, the commission includes Aliaksandra Doinich, Mikhail Rubin, Siarhei Stalmakou, Dzmitry Shchygelsky, Ales Yurkoits, Mikalai Kazlou and Kseniya Lutskina.
The decisions were adopted following an open meeting of the Coordination Council on July 28, at which the candidates presented their programmes.
