In 2026, a green-red laser light warning system is planned to be introduced on the M1 Brest–Minsk–Russian border and M4 Minsk–Mahilyow highways to attract drivers’ attention and prevent road accidents. This was reported by Andrei Liubimau, head of the Minsk Regional Police Department, at a press conference summarizing the results of work in 2025, BelTA reported.
According to him, the road safety situation in Minsk region remained difficult last year. A total of 741 road accidents were registered in the region, in which 115 people were killed and another 823 sustained injuries of varying severity.
More than 319,000 traffic violations were identified during road traffic supervision. Of these, 53,900 were committed by pedestrians and cyclists, including 9,300 while intoxicated. In addition, 2,200 cases of driving under the influence were recorded. As a result of drunk driving, 60 accidents occurred, killing 21 people and injuring 65 others.
To reduce accident rates in 2026, the region will continue preventive and awareness-raising efforts and strengthen enforcement measures, including the use of drones. The Minsk regional traffic police have approved three structural subprograms providing for the implementation of 288 engineering solutions.
In 2026, plans include installing 33.22 km of road barriers on median strips, equipping external lighting at 63 pedestrian crossings, arranging five roundabouts, and building 11 traffic light facilities at accident-prone pedestrian crossings and intersections.
An additional measure will be the installation on the M1 and M4 highways of a laser light warning system with green and red signals, which is expected to help reduce the number of accidents linked to drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
