Government Ready to Reinstate Price Controls in Case of “Unjustified Growth”

First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Mikalai Snapkou held a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade, the Ministry of Architecture and Construction, the State Committee for Standardization, regional executive committees and the Minsk City Executive Committee, as well as representatives of major retail chains and importers. The meeting discussed consumer price dynamics following the abolition of price controls, the situation on the market for socially important goods and analytical work by government agencies.

It was noted that the price situation remains stable and under control. No prerequisites for an increase in retail prices have been identified.

Representatives of retail chains and importers were warned that price controls could be reinstated if signs of unjustified price increases or increased pressure from external factors are detected, the government’s press service reports.

The Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade and regional executive committees were instructed to monitor the price situation. The ministry’s main departments in the regions and Minsk, as well as the main departments for trade and services of regional executive committees and the Minsk City Executive Committee, will analyze price developments in the regions, identifying the reasons for and justification of retail price increases.

The authorities were tasked with stepping up preventive analytical work aimed at identifying negative trends in the consumer market and preventing violations.

In July 2026, the government reduced the list of goods subject to price controls from 199 to 76 items. The government explained the decision by “stabilization of the price situation.”
