A video recording or online broadcast is often the only way for Belarusians in political exile to take part in the funeral of loved ones on the other side of the border. Mass repression since 2020 has cut off their path home, while the safety of life in European countries has come at a dramatic price: the inability to embrace their family at the most difficult moment, attend a funeral or visit the graves of their relatives.
From September 15 to 27, Poznań will host the exhibition “POGRZEB.MP4. Utrata i żałoba na emigracji politycznej,” dedicated to this painful subject.
The project was developed on the basis of in-depth interviews and research into the private archives of Belarusian women and men with experience of forced exile. It creates a space for discussing pain that usually remains private and invisible. How does one grieve far from home? What replaces traditional rituals, and what does experiencing loss from a distance look like? How can memory be preserved despite borders?
The temporary exhibition will feature photographs and video recordings from private archives, as well as installations. The exhibition will also include a personal musical work by a well-known Belarusian artist that currently exists as a work-in-progress version. At the artist’s request, the song will be available to listen to exclusively in the gallery space.
The exhibition will open at 7:00 p.m. on September 15 at Atelier WIMAR Stowarzyszenie Łazęga Poznańska (ul. Święty Marcin 75), Poznań. Admission is free.
