Two foreign nationals have been detained at the Belarusian-Polish border after drugs were found in their possession, the State Border Committee said.
On June 27, a passenger car carrying a family from Germany entered Belarus through the Brest border checkpoint. During the inspection, a service dog alerted officers to the belongings of a 28-year-old passenger. Border guards found a grinder containing traces of a dark green substance in his bag. An examination confirmed that it was marijuana.
The foreign national was also found to be carrying two electronic cigarettes believed to contain cannabis oil and a blister pack of tablets that also attracted the attention of the service dog. These items have been sent for forensic examination.
At the same border checkpoint on June 29, a 22-year-old French citizen was detained. He was entering Belarus by car with relatives who are citizens of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A service dog alerted officers to the man. He did not deny possessing drugs and voluntarily handed over a package containing marijuana. Border guards also found a grinder with traces of the drug in his bag.
A medical examination confirmed that the foreign national had used narcotic substances.
Criminal cases have been opened against both foreign nationals under Part 1 of Article 328 and Part 1 of Article 328-1 of the Criminal Code (illegal drug trafficking and smuggling drugs across the border). Both have been placed in the temporary detention facility of the Brest Border Group.
