Five officials have paid compensation for damage caused by the deterioration in water quality in Rahachou following a lawsuit filed by the prosecutor’s office. More than 15,600 roubles were recovered from them.
On April 29, 2026, residents of Rahachou began complaining about the quality of their water, reporting an unusual smell. The water supply through the mains was suspended, and water had to be delivered by tanker trucks.
Due to the suspension of the water supply, utility bills were recalculated for a two-day period.
“The investigation found that between April 27 and 29, employees of the water supply and sewage department of the Rahachou district, under the supervision of the head of the pumping station, carried out painting work on structural elements of the iron removal facility. Those responsible allowed the use of enamel paint and solvent that are not intended for such purposes at these facilities. The materials reacted chemically with the water, resulting in a deterioration in its quality,” the prosecutor’s office said.
Responsibility was assigned to the head of the pumping station, the head of the water supply and sewage department and his deputy, the branch director and his first deputy. The costs incurred to eliminate the consequences of the incident caused more than 34,000 roubles in damage to the Homielvadakanal municipal utility company.
