People continue to be detained after returning to Belarus from abroad. One such case became known this week, the Viasna human rights center reports.
Human rights defenders note that even a short trip to Belarus can end in detention, the opening of a criminal case and imprisonment for several months or years.
The risk of persecution also remains for those who come for a short time to visit relatives, resolve personal matters, or collect documents or belongings.
“Before traveling to Belarus, it is important to take these risks into account and not regard the absence of previous problems with the security forces as a guarantee of safety,” Viasna warns.
