The European Commission has proposed that the Council of the EU unblock funds allocated to Hungary and allow the country to rejoin the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programs. If approved, the decision would give Budapest access to €4.2 billion.
The funds were blocked at the end of 2022, when the Council, acting on a proposal from the European Commission, responded to violations of the rule-of-law principles in Hungary. The violations concerned public procurement, criminal prosecution, conflicts of interest, the fight against corruption and public-interest trusts.
After Péter Magyar’s victory in the parliamentary elections and Viktor Orbán’s departure this year, the violations were remedied, as confirmed by the European Commission.
