The European Union may transfer the first tranche of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine as early as next week. The loan is intended to finance Kyiv’s state and defence needs in 2026-2027.
“I hope that next week we will be able to make the first payment,” European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said today.
It should be recalled that the financing had been approved by EU leaders, but the final decision was blocked by Hungary. The veto was lifted after Viktor Orbán lost the parliamentary elections.
Marta Kos also expressed hope for the imminent start of negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership.
“I will urge the ministers today, because we can begin negotiations on the first cluster before the end of the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU, and we can open the remaining five clusters in July,” she said.
