Tax breaks for electric vehicle owners expired this year. Next year, they will receive notices requiring them to pay transport tax. Belarusian Minister of Taxes and Duties Dzmitry Kiiko issued the warning in an interview with CTV, the broadcaster reported.
“It has already happened. So, electric vehicle owners will also receive transport tax notices in 2027, because the tax exemption for electric vehicles ceased to apply in 2026, and these vehicles will now be taxed at the standard rates,” he said.
The minister explained that transport tax is levied to support the road network, so the environmental benefits of electric vehicles are not taken into account.
“We must not forget that we all use the relevant infrastructure, primarily roads. At present, our tax system does not include an environmental component. In Belarus, transport tax serves as a dedicated source of funding for road construction expenditure. That is why we say the time has come to ensure that everyone shares the responsibility for financing this type of public expenditure.
If environmental issues need to be addressed in the future, the tax system will, of course, be adapted accordingly, and we will look for mechanisms that can help tackle specific challenges in line with established priorities,” Kiiko said.
