Belarusian political refugee Leu Mikheyeu, who was deported from Georgia to Armenia on September 25, intends to seek asylum in the country. Human rights defender Raman Kisliak told Pozirk.
According to Kisliak, Mikheyeu managed to find relatively inexpensive accommodation and is now gradually settling in. The Belarusian diaspora continues to raise funds to support him.
Mikheyeu had spent about five years unsuccessfully seeking asylum in Georgia. The Georgian authorities finally rejected his application on June 29, 2026. On September 25, he was detained and deported to Armenia on the same day. There, he was detained because he is wanted internationally at the request of the Belarusian authorities, but was released soon afterwards.
Since 2020, Georgia has become a destination for Belarusians facing persecution or fearing repression in their home country. However, the Georgian authorities have not granted asylum to any Belarusian applicants.
