Death Toll in Spanish Train Crash Rises to 30

The death toll from a train crash in Spain has risen to 30, the regional government of Castile-La Mancha, where two high-speed trains collided, has reported. These figures are not final; some sources earlier reported 46 fatalities.

This morning, a Renfe train collided with an Iryo train. Both were travelling from Madrid to Seville. According to preliminary information, the Iryo train had stopped on the tracks when the second train, travelling at more than 100 km/h, crashed into it. Investigators are reportedly considering driver error and a malfunction in the signalling system, which should have warned the second train that the tracks were occupied.

Several carriages derailed in the collision, and two fell down an embankment. Some carriages sustained extensive damage.

A total of 544 people were travelling on the two trains.

This is the second serious accident on Spain’s high-speed rail network in 2026.
