The death toll from the powerful earthquake in Venezuela has risen to 235, Health Minister Carlos Alvarado said. Search and rescue operations are still underway. According to the minister, more than 4,300 injured people have received medical assistance. The injuries range from minor to severe.
A total of 250 buildings have been destroyed or damaged across the country. Hospitals, the headquarters of the Venezuelan Red Cross and the French embassy have sustained severe damage.
The hardest-hit area is La Guaira state, which borders the capital, Caracas. The state’s territory is also home to the country’s main airport.
