The Cyber Partisans calculated that at least 393,881 people fighting on Russia’s side had been killed between the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and August 27, 2026. The group arrived at this figure using data extracted from Rosstat’s internal information system in a hack reported earlier.
The calculation was based on the death registration database. It included records listing military operations (code Y36 under the International Classification of Diseases), the consequences of military operations (Y89.1), as well as cases in which deaths resulting from combat operations were described in words without the corresponding code.
“Thus, the figure of almost 394,000 deaths represents the minimum number of confirmed fatalities resulting from combat operations on the Russian side alone,” the Cyber Partisans said.
The hackers acknowledged that a small percentage of civilians killed as a result of combat operations, as well as participants in other armed conflicts during the period under review, may have been included in the statistics.
At the same time, the calculation does not cover people who died in the war but were not entered into the register or were registered with a different or unspecified cause of death. In addition, some records may have been missed due to data entry errors.
“It is also important to distinguish between the number of fatalities and the total number of personnel losses (killed, wounded, disabled and missing). We calculated the number of confirmed fatalities specifically. The total number of personnel losses in armed conflicts is generally three to five times higher than the number of deaths. Thus, our figure is consistent with the Russian army personnel loss figures published by Ukrainian agencies,” the group stressed.
The hacker group Silent Crow, which took part in the Rosstat breach alongside the Cyber Partisans, also produced its own estimate of 450,100 people killed based on the data obtained. According to the Cyber Partisans, the two estimates differ slightly because of different methodologies.
Silent Crow reported that the hack had yielded databases from the Demography information system containing information on Russia’s population and causes of death. Based on this data, the group launched a website featuring statistics on Russian military losses.
The Cyber Partisans announced a separate count of Belarusian citizens killed while fighting on Russia’s side. According to the hackers, data from Belarusian government databases in their possession makes it possible to establish the number of such fatalities between 2022 and 2024.
